Hackney Wick Flea Market

It's not always the quantity of stalls that maketh a good flea market as I found out today in Hackney Wick.

Upon turning the corner into White Post Lane this morning my heart sunk a little as I counted just 8 stalls at this month’s Hackney Wick Flea Market. It had only taken me 5 minutes to walk there but if I was feeling disappointed how could I recommend my local flea if some folks might travel from other parts of London? Although, I should really know by now that it’s not the quantity of stalls that matters; I can go to a carboot sale with over 500 sellers and end up spending all my money with just one or two people.

Calling me from afar was this well placed vintage suede waistcoat with killer fringing – worth the trip from any part of London I reckon!  It belonged to a stall run by three sassy gals Lucy Pook a make up artist, Stephanie a project manager and Emma who works in TV acquisitions. Their stall was bursting with vintage festival fun – denim, sunglasses, belts, a floppy hat, breton style tees, espadrilles… I would have backed in the Thrift-ola vanette and bought the stall job lot had it been on offer! Oh and if I had a van.

Lovely shoes.

Emma’s pick of the day from their stall were these absolutely stunning Herbert Levine leopard shoes on sale for a snip at £10. How excited would you be skipping away from the flea wearing these cuties.

The girls consider themselves ‘guerilla carbooters’ – as in they don’t do it all the time, just when it takes their fancy.  You can also find them selling their wares at Princess May car boot sale in Stoke Newington.

So, is Hackney Wick Flea Market worth the trip? It’ll *always* be a gamble as to which sellers show up each month so my advice is to tie it in with other events happening in the area. Stour Space often host exhibitions, markets and festivals. Counter Cafe and The Hackney Pearl are two local eateries within 5 minutes of the flea and are always ace places for a leisurely lunch stop off. You can then take a lovely canal walk onto Broadway Market for more thrifting fun or onto Victoria Park if the sun is shining. But lets just hope you’ll be too weighed down with thrifted goodness and you’ll have to go straight home!
